but it has little to do with trust. he believes in them and their abilities; he merely believes there are some truths, some evils, that they need not experience if he could protect them. one day they will encounter them all. obviously, they will, since okkotsu is from the future.

he wishes for them to remain "teenagers" a little while longer.
so it is not about trust, but about his own selfish wish to let them live without the knowledge of how heartless their world really is.
... okkotsu has already had to come to understand the truth of what sort of reality that they live in, and he can sense that change in him. it is the accumulation of despairs and poison that changes someone to an adult.
at least, the young man's heart has been protected somehow; at least, he did not end up becoming ruined by it all. so as much as he wishes someone could have protected him, all that he can do is ensure okkotsu does not suffer more than he needs to suffer. ]
