GEMBOND ✦ EmeraldGreeting, this is Nanami Kento's voice mail. I am unavailable. Please leave a short message and I will get back to you. Thank you.
[ he's never met nanami in person, and back home, he wouldn't ever have had the opportunity to. and while this isn't the first time yuta has seen him here, it's... well. he can't decide if he's glad to have met nanami at all, that he has a chance to live a life away from everything, or if it just makes it more painful that he doesn't have anything to return to.
yuta has fought people and things greater than himself. confronting suguru geto didn't feel as daunting as this. but nanami is right—there is no good way to start this kind of discussion, so after taking a small, shaky breath, he decides to start from the beginning. ]
When I was overseas... around September, Gojou-sensei visited me during my training. He said that if anything were to happen to him, he wanted me to take care of the first and second year students. He was especially concerned about Itadori, and asked me to keep an eye out for him. I didn't understand it at first... I couldn't really imagine anything happening to him, but I agreed to it anyway.
[ he pauses here, fingers loosening from their grip around the black case and settling in his lap instead. he doesn't know the complete details about that night in shibuya, having arrived much later after most of the action had taken place, but he tells nanami what he knows: gojou getting sealed in the prison realm, sukuna taking over yuji and the devastating consequences of that; nanami's death, and yuta's plan of faking yuji's execution to buy them all some time afterwards to plan for the culling game and save megumi's sister.
it's a lot at once, but yuta forces himself through it. in the end, he leans back in his seat, feeling a weight sloughed off his shoulders but a hollowness still in his stomach. this was never going to be easy, he knew that going in, and nanami even said so himself. but he doesn't think he could have ever prepared himself properly for this. ]
I'm— [ he swallows hard, looking at his hands. ] I'm sorry, Nanami-san.
[ for not being there sooner. for not being able to help. ]
[ if the mood were better, nanami would have made some quip about how he's surprised that gojou actually showed some foresight.
but he is aware that irresponsible and troublesome senpai of his is actually constantly thinking of the future. nanami knows that it most likely started back in high school when all of them became broken in some way -- and knew they could not trust the adults or elders to protect them anymore.
that isn't the world nanami wanted the next generation to exist in, and that isn't the world gojou wants to leave for anyone. gojou is the strongest and could eradicate everything, but that isn't the same as creating something better.
perhaps, even if the mood were better, nanami would not find the means to be able to make a joke about gojou showing foresight in his actions. ]
[ nanami doesn't interrupt okkotsu as he explains what has happened, about the burdens that have been placed on him. he doesn't respond at hearing about his own death at the hands of the patchwork curse -- he had already accepted things must have turned out that way.
indeed, there is much to process and even more to worry about.
gojou being gone created a power vacuum that everyone is attempting to fill -- curse and sorcerer alike. it's opportunistic nonsense that makes his face sour. he can only imagine the casualties of innocents and "guilty" as they focus on maintaining their power and control rather than protect.
that is why gojou worked so hard to create a better world, because he knew that if he were to leave it, something like this would happen. the curses, however, are a surprise.
he lets out a small sigh, and lets out a harder one at okkotsu apologizing. ]
Don't be.
[ he shakes his head firmly. he will not let him feel any guilt for what has happened. the sins are not on him, but on their society itself.
certainly the one controlling suguru getou is an issue -- more than issue, and perhaps could be named their "true enemy" -- but the jujutsu society is shit. it's shit that only thinks of itself and this just exposed the rotten filth that it has always been.
it should be united to release gojou to save everyone rather than finding excuses to ensure their own crumbling statuses. nanami can follow their thinking and grits his teeth into a grimace. ]
None of this is your fault, Okkotsu-kun. You are doing just as Gojou-san has asked you, and if you were part of everything in Shibuya, it does not mean that the results would have changed at all.
In truth, it might have meant that you'd be targeted by the Elders just as much as everyone else is. However, because you were able to fool them, you kept Itadori-kun safe. You're able to move now without them aware of your alliance and allegiance and that means you can do more good presently.
[ he breathes out again and rests his hand on the young man's shoulder -- feelings of gratitude and anger on his behalf is felt, but the former emotions outweigh the latter.
there is so much that can be said, but more that can be felt. yet again, nanami finds himself a little grateful for the ability to sync as he feels it can help save okkotsu's heart from breaking anymore. ]
