RESIDENCE ✦ Residency
GEMBOND ✦ EmeraldGreeting, this is Nanami Kento's voice mail. I am unavailable. Please leave a short message and I will get back to you. Thank you.
[ the cool thing about nanami (aside from him being cool and intimidating in general) is that he's always to the point. which is great when he's been used to dealing with other adults like gojo, who likely wouldn't let yuta hear the end of it in regards to what he's about to ask: ]
[ He blinks at the question. Somehow, he thought it would be something else, but this is also fine. ]
It is all right.
It would be better to give something that the owner or owners are in need of, instead. Or perhaps something to wish them good luck in their new residence.
Yes, a plant would be good. It gives the impression that you believe it will live well in their care for a long time, and that they will be where they are also flourishing, in some small way.
It would be rude to say that you can only ask me one thing a day. Furthermore, you are not a certain person that we both know that would ask me inane questions under the guise of wanting something else, so I trust you not to waste my time.
[ no shibuya. a part of him is somewhat glad nanami and the others don't seem to remember the events that happened that night, even if it means that it would fall to him to break the news.
fushiguro had told him earlier that he's been in this world for about three months now, and that he has not met itadori yet because he was still overseas. which is true—three months ago, he was still in africa and when he met itadori here, the latter didn't seem to recognize him. it's strange, to know more than they know, as if he's from a future they have yet to experience. is it his place, then, to share this information? would it matter in the end, when they return home and forget about the things they've experienced here?
there is a freedom here that they don't have back home. here, they are not burdened with their duty to exorcise curses. here, they can be normal and experience the mundane, everyday things they didn't get the chance to experience before. is it his place to disrupt that? ]
[ he takes a while to type out his next text, starting and stopping, erasing and re-typing multiple times before finally settling on something. ]
There are some things that I remember that I think the others don't. I don't know if I should tell them. I'm not sure how this place works, I don't know if the way time flows here is similar to how it is back on our world and I don't know if we'll remember the things that happened here when we go back. I'm worried if I tell them, it will ruin whatever peace they've gotten here.
Maybe it's wrong of me to worry about that. I'm sorry to burden you with this so suddenly. It's been on my mind a lot.
[ he muses over what is said and what isn't said. ]
If you believe it is something that will ruin the peace that they have achieved here, do not tell them. It will only make them worry and fixate on returning home when we do not yet know if a voluntary return home is possible.
It is not wrong for you to worry about it. You have been worrying about this on your own, and I thank you. I would rather that you ruminate on it than do something rash.
[ there are things that he has kept from itadori for the sake of sparing the teenager from feeling guilt or upset. he realizes that one day those truths will come out and he will have to face them. he can only imagine what troubles are happening that has okkotsu concerned, but those teenagers do not need to face them. not now, not here when they can do nothing. ]
[ it was a good thing he decided not to say anything yet, opting to go along with what fushiguro knew instead. still, it weighs on him, a constant presence at the back of his mind whenever he's around the others. ]
[ he closes his eyes for a second. he thinks it would be easier to dismiss whatever comes next, but that would be unfair to okkotsu who is carrying quite the burden, it would seem.
nanami feels he understands what is about to be said next. he has either died or been gravely injured to the point where death would be preferred. those are the only two reasons to hesitate in telling him anything.
his hand lifts to remove the glasses that he is wearing. he sets them down on the nearest surface and pinches the area between his eyes. nanami already knew his retirement was impossible; he knew that he was holding a lie to motivate himself. he already had his reason for living -- it was to help those of the younger generation live and believe in a brighter future.
that future isn't something that exists for them now, and he hates to leave it in their hands to create, but he wants them to believe in it for themselves. he doesn't want them to keep repeating the same mistakes as all the adults before him did.
he breathes out as he accepts what comes next.
"thank you." "nanamin." "nanami-san." their voices enter his thoughts easily. he has received all the thanks and appreciation that he could ever need.
nanami types his message: ]
Yes, even if it involves me.
I am prepared to hear what knowledge burdens you, Okkotsu-kun.
I am already asking you to do something painful. In truth, it is not my place to tell you what you should do, but you are willing to listen to my advice and guidance.
[ because he is certain that if itadori or fushiguro knew that he has hid things from them, they would be hurt at first to know he did so. they may come to understand his reasons, but they would feel some sense of hurt, like he did not trust them.
but it has little to do with trust. he believes in them and their abilities; he merely believes there are some truths, some evils, that they need not experience if he could protect them. one day they will encounter them all. obviously, they will, since okkotsu is from the future.
but not now. not yet. not so soon.
he wishes for them to remain "teenagers" a little while longer.
so it is not about trust, but about his own selfish wish to let them live without the knowledge of how heartless their world really is.
... okkotsu has already had to come to understand the truth of what sort of reality that they live in, and he can sense that change in him. it is the accumulation of despairs and poison that changes someone to an adult.
at least, the young man's heart has been protected somehow; at least, he did not end up becoming ruined by it all. so as much as he wishes someone could have protected him, all that he can do is ensure okkotsu does not suffer more than he needs to suffer. ]
I will meet with you in person. Let's have a proper talk, Okkotsu-kun.
[ yuta has never blamed anyone for his misfortune, or for any of the events in his life that had led him to where he is today. he had stopped being a child since rika's accident, and nothing was ever normal from that day forward. they've all seen their share of horrors—from the moment they become jujutsu sorcerers, nothing in their lives would ever be the same; it is only a matter of time before the consequences catch up to them one way or another. yuta knows this. one of these days they will break and their souls will crumble, little by little.
but he'd held on to his. because of rika, because of maki, because of panda, because of inumaki. he has no doubt that yuji and the others will weather it; he's seen it, after all.
it doesn't make the idea of telling nanami any easier, though.
yuta sends him his location, a quiet area not too far from the government housing. he sits on a bench as he waits for him, fingers twisted in the strap of the black case he carries. in spite of everything, he's glad that he's telling nanami rather than the others; there's comfort in the older man's calm demeanor, in the even-handed logic he provides. at the very least, he knows that nanami will understand, and perhaps, that's all that really matters. ]
[ nanami heads to the location -- he is as prompt as he can be to where okkotsu advises for them to meet. breathing in slow through his nose first, he lets out a half-sigh as he walks to the bench that the young man is sitting on.
he tips his head in greeting first, because that is proper despite the situation that they find themselves. okkotsu-kun is someone who truly thinks of others first. despite everything that he has gone through, despite how the higher-ups treat him, he still wishes to protect the lives and happiness of others.
it is truly a shame he had to grow up so soon.
but he tucks that thought away as he sits down. ]
There is no good way to start this sort of talk, Okkotsu-kun, so just speak when you feel ready.
[ he's never met nanami in person, and back home, he wouldn't ever have had the opportunity to. and while this isn't the first time yuta has seen him here, it's... well. he can't decide if he's glad to have met nanami at all, that he has a chance to live a life away from everything, or if it just makes it more painful that he doesn't have anything to return to.
yuta has fought people and things greater than himself. confronting suguru geto didn't feel as daunting as this. but nanami is right—there is no good way to start this kind of discussion, so after taking a small, shaky breath, he decides to start from the beginning. ]
When I was overseas... around September, Gojou-sensei visited me during my training. He said that if anything were to happen to him, he wanted me to take care of the first and second year students. He was especially concerned about Itadori, and asked me to keep an eye out for him. I didn't understand it at first... I couldn't really imagine anything happening to him, but I agreed to it anyway.
[ he pauses here, fingers loosening from their grip around the black case and settling in his lap instead. he doesn't know the complete details about that night in shibuya, having arrived much later after most of the action had taken place, but he tells nanami what he knows: gojou getting sealed in the prison realm, sukuna taking over yuji and the devastating consequences of that; nanami's death, and yuta's plan of faking yuji's execution to buy them all some time afterwards to plan for the culling game and save megumi's sister.
it's a lot at once, but yuta forces himself through it. in the end, he leans back in his seat, feeling a weight sloughed off his shoulders but a hollowness still in his stomach. this was never going to be easy, he knew that going in, and nanami even said so himself. but he doesn't think he could have ever prepared himself properly for this. ]
I'm— [ he swallows hard, looking at his hands. ] I'm sorry, Nanami-san.
[ for not being there sooner. for not being able to help. ]
[ if the mood were better, nanami would have made some quip about how he's surprised that gojou actually showed some foresight.
but he is aware that irresponsible and troublesome senpai of his is actually constantly thinking of the future. nanami knows that it most likely started back in high school when all of them became broken in some way -- and knew they could not trust the adults or elders to protect them anymore.
that isn't the world nanami wanted the next generation to exist in, and that isn't the world gojou wants to leave for anyone. gojou is the strongest and could eradicate everything, but that isn't the same as creating something better.
perhaps, even if the mood were better, nanami would not find the means to be able to make a joke about gojou showing foresight in his actions. ]
[ nanami doesn't interrupt okkotsu as he explains what has happened, about the burdens that have been placed on him. he doesn't respond at hearing about his own death at the hands of the patchwork curse -- he had already accepted things must have turned out that way.
indeed, there is much to process and even more to worry about.
gojou being gone created a power vacuum that everyone is attempting to fill -- curse and sorcerer alike. it's opportunistic nonsense that makes his face sour. he can only imagine the casualties of innocents and "guilty" as they focus on maintaining their power and control rather than protect.
that is why gojou worked so hard to create a better world, because he knew that if he were to leave it, something like this would happen. the curses, however, are a surprise.
he lets out a small sigh, and lets out a harder one at okkotsu apologizing. ]
Don't be.
[ he shakes his head firmly. he will not let him feel any guilt for what has happened. the sins are not on him, but on their society itself.
certainly the one controlling suguru getou is an issue -- more than issue, and perhaps could be named their "true enemy" -- but the jujutsu society is shit. it's shit that only thinks of itself and this just exposed the rotten filth that it has always been.
it should be united to release gojou to save everyone rather than finding excuses to ensure their own crumbling statuses. nanami can follow their thinking and grits his teeth into a grimace. ]
None of this is your fault, Okkotsu-kun. You are doing just as Gojou-san has asked you, and if you were part of everything in Shibuya, it does not mean that the results would have changed at all.
In truth, it might have meant that you'd be targeted by the Elders just as much as everyone else is. However, because you were able to fool them, you kept Itadori-kun safe. You're able to move now without them aware of your alliance and allegiance and that means you can do more good presently.
[ he breathes out again and rests his hand on the young man's shoulder -- feelings of gratitude and anger on his behalf is felt, but the former emotions outweigh the latter.
there is so much that can be said, but more that can be felt. yet again, nanami finds himself a little grateful for the ability to sync as he feels it can help save okkotsu's heart from breaking anymore. ]

Well, I guess the easiest way to ask this is, if you're comfortable with telling me, what's the last thing you remember from home?

23/5/21 23:18 (UTC)Itadori-kun, Fushiguro-kun and Kugisaki-chan each killed one Special Grade Curse, and they were being considered for Grade 1 Sorcerers.
